Two days from now I will begin to realize
a dream I've had for several years, to ride my bicycle around Lake Ontario.
It will be nine or ten days of riding, camping and with any luck, easing
into that altered state of mind a long bike trip brings. Something about
the road slipping away under the tires while objects on the horizon rise
up and fall away into the past causes the brain to relax. It's a form of
meditation that has, over the years, reduced more than one unfixable mess
to the merely manageable for me. I hope the trip I am about to embark on
will be similarly magicial, and in fact it had better be because I am currently
facing a challenge I can't see an answer to.
So begins the opening paragraph of the latest offering from Lost City Press author Fred Gardiner. A Trip Around Lake Ontario on A Bicycle is the chronicle of a trip made in the summer of 2003. Half trip journal, half meditation on the nature of relationships, this book attempts to capture a moment in time, one of those moments in life when you find yourself facing a challenge you can't see a solution to, and can think of nothing better to clear your mind than to load up a bicycle with camping gear and head out on the open road. The book is 49 pages long and includes colour photographs taken by the author. To read a short extract in pdf format, click on the cover.
