When first published, in 1984, Fred Gardiner’s
book, Ten Bike Tours in and Around Toronto, broke new ground by
encouraging Torontonians to consider the long-distance bike ride as a form
of recreation that almost anyone could engage in. Thousands of people who
had not previously thought of their bicycle as a way to get to provincial
parks or conservation areas in the Toronto hinterland bought the book and
took the tours. As Mr. Gardiner puts it, “It is not unusual now for me
to see other cyclists when I am out on a day-trip or an overnighter, but
it sure was in 1984. I like to think that my little book was at least partially
responsible for that change.”
Twenty years later, Lost City Press continues to receive requests for
this title, even though it has been out-of-print for over ten years. Happily,
Mr. Gardiner has revisited his original ten rides and produced an all-new,
2006 version of his classic cycling guide. How well have the original tours
held up in the face of urban sprawl? “You do have to ride a little further
to get that out-of-the-city feeling,” Gardiner reports, “but most of the
original tours are still there to enjoy. And the two that aren’t got replaced
by rides I think are even better.”
Ten Bike Tours In and Around Toronto has always been a book with
a mission and this new version is no different. “When I first wrote the
book,” Gardiner explains, “I wanted readers to know that just about anyone
can do bicycle touring if they work up to it. So, the book starts with
a few short rides around the city and then moves onto slight longer rides
to places like The Sharon Temple and Valens Conservation Area. These tours
let you build up your leg muscles until you can comfortably ride forty-or-fifty
miles, and then you’re into overnight camping trips which is where the
real joy of bicycle touring lies, for me anyway. There’s nothing quite
like leaving the city behind with everything you need for a two-or-three
day trip securely strapped to your rear rack. It’s a feeling of freedom
and self-reliance that is hard to come by any other way.”
