When first published, in 1985, Ten
Bike Tours in and Around Toronto, broke new ground. It encouraged Torontonians
to consider bicycling touring as a form of recreation. Thousands of people
bought the book and took the tours. It was unusal back then to see other
cyclists when I was on my way to Terra Cotta or Sutton. Now it isn't. I
like to think that my little book was at least partially responsible for
that change.
The trouble with a book about bike tours, of course, is that it can become dated rather quickly. Campsites close. Two-lane highways become four-lane highways, or just simply disappear. So when I decided to update this book for the third time, I knew it would be a lot of work, and that some tours would no longer be valid. The Terra Cotta overnighter disappeared, but was replaced by one to Valens Conservation Area that I think is just as good. Ten Bike Tours In and Around Toronto has always been a book with a mission and this new version is no different. The book starts with a few short rides around the city and then moves onto slightly longer rides to places like The Sharon Temple. These tours let you build up your leg muscles until you can comfortably ride forty-or-fifty miles, and then you're into overnight camping trips which is where the real joy of bicycle touring lies, for me anyway. There's nothing quite like leaving the city behind with everything you need for a two-or-three day trip securely strapped to your rear rack. It's a feeling of freedom and self-reliance that is hard to come by any other way.
